Remembering the Remarkable Journey of USC Football Legend Mike Battle

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mike Battle, a standout defensive back and key player on USC’s 1967 national championship team, as well as a former New York Jets player, passed away at the age of 78. He died from natural causes on March 6 in Nellysford, Virginia, according to the university.
During his time at USC, Battle played a pivotal role in the success of the team, with an impressive defensive record that limited opponents to just 87 points in the entire season. Over his three-year career, the Trojans had a strong record of 26-6-1 and secured three conference titles. Battle notably participated in the 1967, 1968, and 1969 Rose Bowl games, all victories for USC.
Battle excelled in special teams as well, leading the Trojans in punt returns each season and setting a school record for the most punts returned in a single season. His standout performance in 1967 led to him being crowned the NCAA statistical champion in punt returns, with 49 returns for 608 yards, averaging 12.4 yards per return. In total, Battle holds the school record for most punts returned over his three-year tenure.
Drafted in the 12th round of the 1969 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, Battle went on to play two seasons with the team in 1969 and 1970. Additionally, he made a cameo appearance in the 1970 film “C.C. and Company,” alongside his Jets teammate Joe Namath and actress Ann-Margret.
Battle is survived by his wife Laura and their children Christian Michael, Hunter, Frank, Michael, Kathleen, Murphy, and Annie.
