Shocking Incident During Committee Hearing Involving Colleague

Congresswoman Sarah McBride, a trailblazing transgender lawmaker from Delaware, faced disrespectful behavior from her Republican counterparts yet again during a recent committee meeting. The incident occurred during a House foreign affairs subcommittee session, where Rep. Keith Self from Texas misgendered McBride by referring to her as “Mr. McBride” in his introduction. McBride promptly corrected him by addressing the chair as “Madame Chair.” As she began her questioning, Rep. Bill Keating of Massachusetts intervened, requesting Self to repeat the introduction. Despite the objection, Self persisted in using the incorrect title. The exchange escalated as Keating questioned the chairman’s lack of respect, resulting in Self abruptly adjourning the hearing. McBride expressed disappointment over the premature end of the session, emphasizing her readiness to address crucial topics regarding nuclear nonproliferation and support for Democratic allies in Europe. This unfortunately is not an isolated incident, as McBride has previously faced misgendering and discriminatory policies aimed at transgender individuals within Congress.
