I’ve never been a big fan of Chipotle. Maybe it’s because of the way they add red onions to their corn salsa (which happens to be my least favorite vegetable), or perhaps it’s the memory of my high school prom date asking me to the dance with a Sharpie and a burrito bowl lid (flowers would have been nicer). The ongoing talk about shrinkflation certainly hasn’t helped either. In the past, I’ve always preferred Cava or Taco Bell in the fast casual dining scene. However, things have changed now.
Recently, Chipotle introduced a new protein option: Honey Chicken. This new offering completely shifted my perspective on the chain. Let me explain. As part of my job, I tried two dishes with the new sweet and spicy chicken with an open mind. While I wouldn’t call myself a die-hard Chipotle fan, I wasn’t against it either. But with just one bite of the bowl, I was won over.
The Honey Chicken was tender and flavorful, striking the perfect balance between the honey glaze and pepper heat. The combination of sweet and smoky flavors was delightful and stood out even amidst the other toppings. The taste complemented the rice, sour cream, and hot salsa on top. I also found the Honey Chicken to be even more delicious in a quesadilla, paired with the creamy cheese blend and a classic flour tortilla.
I wasn’t the only one impressed. My mom, who was also lukewarm towards Chipotle, couldn’t resist finishing the bowl and a second quesadilla after just one bite. She even decided to include it in our dinner rotation, much to my dad’s delight. According to her, every bite had a burst of flavor and a touch of umami.
The nationwide rollout of Chipotle’s Honey Chicken follows successful testing in Nashville and Sacramento last year. Chris Brandt, Chipotle’s chief brand officer, expressed excitement about sharing this bold new protein option with customers. My personal tip? Ask for the Honey Vinaigrette on the side for an extra burst of flavor when enjoying the chicken. You can thank me later.
