Judge Blocks Release of Palestinian Activist Mahmoud Khalil as Protesters Demand Freedom!

Protesters convened at Foley Square in New York City on Monday, demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil. Demonstrations are set to take place on Tuesday in several major cities as the call for Palestinian activist Khalil’s freedom persists. President Donald Trump’s assertion that Khalil’s arrest is just the beginning has spurred supporters to action.

A “Free Mahmoud Khalil” walkout is scheduled to commence at 11:30 a.m. at Columbia University in New York City. Additionally, a rally is planned for 5:30 p.m. at Federal Plaza in Chicago. Protesters are also anticipated to gather at 5 p.m. at Stanford University in California.

Khalil, a Columbia graduate, was apprehended on Saturday at his residence by federal immigration agents, who informed him that his student visa was being revoked. Despite claims of possessing a green card and permanent residency, he remains in custody at an immigration detention facility in Louisiana.

U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman has temporarily halted Khalil’s deportation, allowing him to remain in the United States as the legal challenges to his arrest and impending removal are assessed. A detention hearing is slated for Wednesday.

Thousands rallied at Foley Square in New York City on Monday to show solidarity with Mahmoud Khalil. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Khalil’s arrest was carried out in conjunction with ICE and the State Department under Trump’s directives against anti-Semitism, alleging Khalil’s ties to Hamas without providing substantiating evidence.

Protests last spring at the university regarding the conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas were among Khalil’s activities. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have indicated further crackdowns on individuals with ties to Hamas.

Khalil’s attorney, Amy Greer, has condemned his arrest as an attempt to suppress lawful dissent, citing violations of the First Amendment. She emphasized the importance of ensuring Khalil’s rights are upheld in the face of government actions. Protesters have voiced their support for Khalil’s release, denouncing the arrest as an assault on free speech.

In a public statement, Khalil’s wife, who is expecting their child, appealed for his return, describing him as a loving husband and a pillar of support. She implored for assistance in bringing Khalil back home to be with her for the birth of their baby.

“She said, welcoming her first child into this world.”
