March Madness 5 Opponents NCAA Teams Covet on Selection Sunday!

When the NCAA men’s basketball bracket is revealed on Sunday evening, some coaches might quietly celebrate under the table. They could be pleased to find themselves in a region with a top-four seed showing a vulnerability they can exploit, or facing an opening-round opponent on a downward spiral since December. This column aims to highlight teams that tournament contenders should hope to face before the official bracket is released, teams that may not be as formidable as their projected seeding suggests.

In the past, this column correctly identified Purdue as a vulnerable No. 1 seed before their early exit, but missed the mark with other predictions. This time, we aim for better results.

Marquette Golden Eagles
Record: 22-9, 13-7 Big East | Projected seed: No. 6
Marquette started the season strong but has since struggled against quality opponents, ranking 46th nationally in recent performance. Their inability to beat top Big East teams raises doubts about their tournament readiness. Despite non-conference wins, Marquette must improve their shooting and support for star guard Kam Jones to have a successful NCAA run.

Purdue Boilermakers
Record: 21-10, 13-7 Big Ten | Projected seed: No. 4
Purdue’s potent offense led by a dynamic point guard is a strength, but their defensive shortcomings, especially in protecting the rim, pose challenges. Without a reliable rim protector, opponents have capitalized inside the arc. Defensive lapses from guards add to Purdue’s vulnerability. Efficient scoring will be key for Purdue to advance deep into the tournament.

Michigan Wolverines
Record: 22-9, 14-6 Big Ten | Projected seed: No. 5 or 6
Michigan, once a strong contender, is now struggling, losing key games due to turnovers and defensive rebounding issues. Their recent skid raises concerns about their postseason prospects. To regain momentum, Michigan must address their ball security and rebounding deficiencies for a successful tournament campaign.

Michigan’s reliance on 7-footers Goldin and Wolf has become evident, with Donaldson struggling to meet his scoring average over seven games and other guards failing to generate consistent scoring chances. The duo has shouldered the offensive load, but their struggle against traps and double teams has worsened Michigan’s turnover issues, with the team giving up 57 turnovers and 56 second-chance opportunities in their recent losses. This trend does not bode well for their March success and could result in an early tournament exit.

On the other hand, the Tennessee Volunteers, despite their strong defense, face vulnerability due to their deliberate pace and reliance on 3-point shooting. Their slow tempo aims to control the game, but this strategy could make them susceptible to upsets. The question remains whether transfer Lanier can step up as a go-to scorer in crucial moments, and if the team can maintain consistent outside shooting to advance far in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd has faced criticism for his teams underperforming in March, despite strong performances in non-tournament games. The current Wildcats team’s recent struggles raise doubts about their postseason potential, especially with defensive issues and reliance on streaky shooting. Success hinges on Love’s performance, Veesaar’s inside scoring, and Bradley and Lewis attacking the rim, while settling for quick 3-pointers could spell trouble for Arizona.
