Robert Redford, aged 88, made a special guest appearance on the season 3 premiere of Dark Winds, a series that follows Navajo police officers in the 1970s. The episode aired on Sunday, March 9 on AMC/AMC+, featuring Redford playing a chess game in jail alongside George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire. The scene showcased Martin’s character, George, achieving checkmate with the help of series star Zahn McClarnon, who plays Navajo tribal police officer Joe Leaphorn. The idea for Martin and Redford to cameo on the show had been discussed since the first season, as both men are executive producers of the series. The cameo scene was shot on a closed set at Redford’s request. Prior to this appearance, Redford’s last on-screen role was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In addition to his acting work, Redford has lent his voice to various projects, including a character in 2020’s Omniboat and narrating his wife’s performance art piece “The Way of the Rain – Hope for Earth.” Martin, on the other hand, had not appeared on screen as an actor since 2015. Dark Winds season 3 airs new episodes on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+.
