Katy Perry bid farewell to American Idol during the grand finale of Season 22. The announcement of her exit took many by surprise as the “Dark Horse” singer revealed her decision on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February 2024. Perry expressed her love for the show but felt the need to march to the beat of her own drum, stating, “I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.”
Fans were saddened by the news, appreciating Perry’s flamboyant outfits and unwavering support for contestants. Perry, alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, had formed a close bond during their time on the show. Richie even humorously remarked that they might consider kidnapping her upon her departure.

Following her exit, Perry delved into other projects, hinting at potential new music. Carrie Underwood, a former American Idol winner, was announced as Perry’s replacement in August 2024. Underwood expressed her excitement to return to the show, describing it as coming “home.” Perry praised Underwood’s addition, recognizing her unique perspective as a former contestant.
For Season 23, Underwood will join Richie and Bryan at the judge’s panel, where they’ve already shared insights and experiences with the country star. The new lineup promises an exciting chapter for American Idol fans.

In other news, following her last American Idol episode in May 2024, Katy Perry has been focusing on her own music career. She launched her seventh studio album in September 2024 and announced her upcoming North American tour in January 2025. Perry shared with PEOPLE, “I will be showcasing some new songs on the Lifetimes Tour, celebrating all the songs from my career thus far.” She promised a spectacle with costume changes, acts, dancers, musicians, and even flying around the room to ensure every audience member gets a close-up experience.
