Newark Police Officer Shot 14-Year-Old Charged with Murder!

A tragic incident unfolded on March 7, 2025 in Newark, NJ, where two police officers were shot, resulting in the fatal injury of Detective Joseph Azcona, 26. A 14-year-old suspect has been charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident, which occurred during an illegal firearms investigation. The accused allegedly fired 29 shots at the officers before they even had a chance to exit their patrol car. The shooting took place near a White Castle and McDonald’s as officers were investigating potential illegal firearm possession by the teenager and others at the scene. Following the exchange of gunfire, Detective Azcona succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, while a second officer is recovering. The suspect’s weapon has been recovered, and five additional individuals are being questioned. The injured officer’s injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening. The identity of the teenage suspect has not been disclosed. Detective Azcona, a two-year veteran, was unmarried and had no children. He passed away in the presence of his family at University Hospital. Authorities have described the officers as heroes and emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances that led a young individual to possess and use a firearm against law enforcement.
