Detained South Korean president freed to cheers and jeers as he faces insurre!

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached, greeted supporters upon his arrival at the presidential residence in Seoul on Saturday. Yoon, who had been in prison, was released, exacerbating political rifts in the important U.S. ally as he faces charges of insurrection stemming from his failed attempt to impose martial law. The country, known for its robust democracy, has been in turmoil since December 3 when Yoon, citing “anti-state forces,” declared martial law but rescinded the order six hours later following a legislative rejection. Yoon’s conservative backers have embraced his claims of election fraud and drawn parallels to the situation involving former President Donald Trump, with some even using symbols and slogans associated with Trump at rallies. Yoon, 64, expressed gratitude for the support he received as he left the detention center in Seoul, waving to supporters carrying South Korean and American flags. Despite his release, Yoon remains suspended from office and faces an insurrection trial, as well as a separate trial to uphold his impeachment. The release of Yoon has further intensified the division between conservatives and liberals in South Korea.

“This marks the start of addressing anti-state groups,” stated Kang, a 30-year-old professional, during a phone interview. Kang expressed optimism that Yoon’s release could influence the Constitutional Court to reverse his impeachment, citing a recent rise in Yoon’s popularity. The court is anticipated to make a decision by the end of this month. In the meantime, Kang shared, “I am preparing to head to the presidential residence to welcome the president.” Reporting from Seoul is Beomsu Jo, Stella Kim from Los Angeles, and Jennifer Jett from Hong Kong.
