Teens facing felony charges following unexpected assault

After a troubling incident at a Delaware middle school, two 13-year-old girls have been charged with several felonies for causing serious harm to another student with a Stanley cup during a physical altercation. The episode took place at Calvin R. McCullough Middle School in New Castle on Feb. 28, prompting a response from Delaware State Police. Investigations revealed that the two girls repeatedly struck a fellow 13-year-old student in the head with a metal Stanley cup. Additionally, a 12-year-old boy was involved in the altercation and hit the victim with his hands, resulting in a misdemeanor charge against him. Following the incident, school staff intervened to separate the students, and the injured student was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of severe head injuries. The two girls are facing three felony charges — second-degree assault, second-degree conspiracy, and possession of a deadly weapon — along with a disorderly conduct charge. The Colonial School District stated that the students involved in the criminal charges will also undergo disciplinary actions, with the district fully cooperating with the authorities. A district representative emphasized that violence within the school district is unequivocally condemned and assured that they are in contact with the families affected by the regrettable event. Both teenagers surrendered themselves this week, and after being arraigned by New Castle County Family Court, they were released to their guardians on $7,500 bonds.
