Unveiling Carolina’s Wildfire Hotspots!

“Mapping Tool Reveals Locations of Enigmatic Wildfires”

North Carolina officials reported over 200 wildfires early Monday, spanning nearly 2,100 acres of land, as per the North Carolina Forest Service. This count included both reported and confirmed fires, with the latter group consisting of active blazes as well as those contained or controlled. A contained fire indicates one that is still burning but no longer spreading, while a controlled fire has been extinguished. The forest service was continuously updating an interactive map to pinpoint the locations and basic details of each fire, using red for active incidents, green for reported incidents, brown for contained fires, and gray for controlled fires.

The largest wildfire in the state was located in southwestern North Carolina, having expanded over 400 acres in Polk County near the South Carolina border, according to the forest service. By Monday, fire officials had contained 30% of the blaze, a significant increase from the zero containment reported the day before.

On the same day, the South Carolina Forestry Commission registered an additional 112 wildfires, releasing a corresponding map showcasing the fire origins across the state. Similar to North Carolina, the commission delineated reported, active, contained, and controlled fires. While at least six wildfires were actively burning, there were at least three other active blazes reported but not yet confirmed.

In Horry County, South Carolina, a substantial fire consumed at least 1,600 acres, stemming from a forest fire that ignited on Saturday amidst dry conditions and unusually warm temperatures. Residents of several neighborhoods in Carolina Forest, about 10 miles west of Myrtle Beach, were evacuated as the fire spread.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency. Firefighters managed to contain 30% of the blaze by Sunday afternoon after aerial and ground crews worked tirelessly to combat the flames. Evacuees were permitted to return home on Sunday, although the fire rescue service cautioned residents to remain vigilant for potential weather changes and rekindling hot spots.

The Polk County and Myrtle Beach fires were the largest in North Carolina and South Carolina, respectively, on Monday. The Polk County fire spanned between 400 and 500 acres, with varying estimates from different agencies. Another fire in Harnett County, near Fayetteville, was burning over 175 acres, most of which had been contained.
