LAKELAND, Florida (AP) — The highly anticipated season opener for the Detroit Tigers has been overshadowed by the unfortunate news that key player Matt Vierling will be starting on the injured list. This unexpected setback was revealed by Tigers manager A.J. Hinch during a press briefing held on Friday. According to Hinch, Vierling is being sidelined to address a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
Vierling, primarily known for his outfield prowess during his tenure with the Tigers, also showcased his versatility by playing at third base and second base in the previous season. The 28-year-old athlete delivered an impressive performance in 2024, achieving career-high stats with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs across 144 games. Vierling was set to take the field as the starting right fielder for the upcoming season.
The duration of Vierling’s absence remains uncertain at this time. Hinch expressed doubt regarding Vierling’s availability for the Tigers’ season opener scheduled against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 27.
