Mysterious Deaths: Couple discovered deceased for weeks

(Reuters) – The tragic news of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa’s untimely demise has shaken the community. The couple, who were found lifeless within their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, had reportedly passed away several days, and potentially up to two weeks, before their bodies were unearthed on Wednesday. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza revealed that the Oscar-winning 95-year-old actor and his 64-year-old wife were discovered in separate rooms of their home situated in the hills north of Santa Fe.

Sheriff Mendoza shared, “Based on the condition of the bodies and other evidence present, it appears likely that Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa had been deceased for several days, perhaps even stretching to a couple of weeks.” The sheriff emphasized the significance of the upcoming autopsy report in shedding light on this perplexing situation.

Of particular concern was the discovery of an open pill bottle and scattered pills near Betsy Arakawa in the bathroom, prompting Sheriff Mendoza to request a comprehensive toxicology report on the various medications found in the household. The results of this analysis could take several months to be completed, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.

Items seized by authorities from the residence included thyroid and heart medications, a 2025 monthly calendar, two green mobile devices, and MyQuest health records, according to a detailed police inventory. Despite initial speculations, Sheriff Mendoza reiterated that foul play was ruled out based on the current evidence at hand and planned to address the media during an upcoming press conference.

Amidst the investigation, concerns were raised regarding the presence of natural gas within the home and its potential role in the tragedy. Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya acknowledged that uncertainties remained about the possibility of a gas leak contributing to the unfortunate events. Notably, a door left slightly ajar at the back of the house and the presence of the couple’s surviving dogs moving in and out of the residence added layers of intrigue to the unfolding narrative.

According to a police affidavit, both Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were found lying on the floor in a sudden and unexpected manner, devoid of any signs of physical trauma. Hackman, a veteran of the silver screen and a former Marine renowned for his distinctive voice, had graced audiences in over 80 films, as well as on television and stage productions throughout his illustrious career spanning from the early 1960s.

Earning his first Oscar nomination for his compelling portrayal in “Bonnie and Clyde,” Hackman later secured two prestigious Academy Awards for his roles in “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a true talent, as the circumstances surrounding the couple’s demise continue to unfold.
