Surprise Appointment of FBI Deputy Director Raises Concerns Among Agents

Despite attempts at reassurance from Bongino, skepticism remains within the FBI following the recent appointment of a deputy director who lacks the traditional background of a career FBI agent. Throughout its 117-year history, the deputy director role has always been held by individuals with extensive knowledge of the bureau’s inner workings, rather than a political appointee chosen by the president. The current FBI Director, Kash Patel, and Bongino himself have no prior experience working at the FBI.

In response to concerns, the FBI Agents Association revealed that Patel had privately committed to appointing an agent as his second in command, aiming to address doubts within the workforce. However, some FBI officials view the deputy director position as crucial, as it involves overseeing operations, supervising field office heads, and handling highly sensitive intelligence.

Critics, including retired FBI official Christopher O’Leary, express alarm over the appointment, fearing that the bureau’s independence may be compromised under the leadership of individuals with conspiracy theories and a history of election denial. Several FBI employees, speaking anonymously, worry that Bongino’s appointment signals a shift towards politicization and jeopardizes the bureau’s investigative integrity.

Bongino’s past statements and associations have sparked further unease among FBI personnel, drawing comparisons to controversial figures like Alex Jones and Stuart Rhodes. Some question his ability to hold a security clearance, given his support for groups like the Oath Keepers. Despite these concerns, many FBI employees are attempting to maintain focus on their duties amidst the uncertainty surrounding the leadership change.

Bongino, a former New York Police Department officer and Secret Service agent, who later pursued a career in media, including hosting a popular podcast, aims to inspire confidence in the FBI’s mission moving forward. Emphasizing the importance of rebuilding trust in the institution, he seeks to assure employees of his commitment to supporting their work and serving the American people.

“I belong to no one else but the American people. But this is the honor of a lifetime, and it’s a serious mission. I plan on implementing that vision.”
