Imagine a stunning banyan tree standing tall at the heart of your backyard, sparking visions of a lush tropical oasis reminiscent of Palm Beach. At this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, the creative minds of Helen Lambrakis and Erik Moraillon from Garden 26 in New York City brought to life a tranquil haven designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. They began by clearing away all existing concrete and replacing it with vibrant, verdant grass, allowing the natural beauty of the banyan tree to take center stage. “Our approach is always to embrace the inherent character of a space and then craft our design around it,” explains Moraillon. “The banyan tree was our muse, guiding us as we conceptualized the entire space around its majestic presence.”
This enchanting garden oasis boasts multiple entry points, requiring it to be visually captivating from every angle. To address this challenge and ensure ease of movement, the designers strategically divided the area into distinct “rooms,” creating a seamless flow and offering a variety of relaxation spots. From fire pit and outdoor dining areas furnished with elegant woven pieces by Bonacina, to a serene wellness space featuring custom meditation cushions, a cozy reading nook, and a classic pool deck—the space caters to diverse preferences for rest and relaxation.
In selecting the plantings, Lambrakis and Moraillon focused on layering textures and shades of green to enhance visual interest and foster a sense of calm within the oasis. Taking into account the air-purifying qualities of the chosen vegetation added an extra dimension to the overall wellness experience. Among the standout plant varieties are lipstick, lady, and Christmas palms, philodendron, giant bird of paradise, agave, and a range of ferns—all carefully curated to promote exploration and self-discovery. “Our goal was to create an environment that encourages introspection, tying back to themes of serenity, meditation, and the grounding presence of the banyan tree,” Lambrakis shares.
