Talented Newcomer Shines at Esteemed Music Awards

Central Cee has made history at the Mobo Awards by becoming the first artist to win the best male act title three times. This marked his seventh award, equaling Stormzy’s record as the most decorated rapper in the awards’ history. Although he did not attend the ceremony in person, host Eddie Kadi collected his prize and humorously remarked that they “share everything… except royalties.”

The event in Newcastle also saw Bashy claim the best album and best hip-hop act awards after a 15-year hiatus from music. Additionally, Darkoo triumphed over competitors Raye and Jorja Smith to be named the best female act. In her acceptance speech, Darkoo mentioned her attempt to use Chat GPT to write her speech but ended up freestyling and expressing gratitude to her family for their unwavering support.

Central Cee, also known as Cench, previously won the best male act award in 2024 and released his debut album last month after scoring eight top 10 singles. Reacting to his win on Instagram, he shared a screenshot of the awards’ coverage with a simple “that’s nice” comment.

Despite not securing wins in his other two nominations, including best drill act and song of the year, Central Cee’s collaboration with Lil Baby, “Band4Band,” peaked at number three on the charts. Ayra Starr made history by winning two awards, becoming the first African woman to win best international act and the first woman to win best African music act in 16 years.

Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel received the Mobo impact award. After being released from jail following an overturned murder conviction, he announced his performance at this summer’s Wireless festival. During his acceptance speech, he reflected on his hardships and emphasized the importance of believing in fate, change, and forgiveness.

Notable performances at the ceremony were delivered by Nova Twins, Spice, Krept And Konan, and award winners Odeal, Darkoo, and Bashy.
