EU’s Secret Ultimatum to Israel Uncovered

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Union (EU) is set to deliver an important message to Israel in the upcoming week regarding the need to ensure a dignified return for Palestinians displaced from their homes in Gaza. A leaked document reveals that Europe is willing to contribute to the reconstruction efforts in the devastated territory. This stance aligns with positions held by Arab nations but stands in contrast to President Donald Trump’s vision for the United States to take charge of rebuilding Gaza and transforming it into a “Riviera of the Middle East” while encouraging Gazans to relocate elsewhere.

The EU, a significant provider of aid to Palestinians, is scheduled to present its position to Israeli officials during talks in Brussels on February 24 as part of the EU-Israel Association Council meeting, marking the first such session since 2022. The draft document outlining the EU’s stance underscores Europe’s commitment to Israel’s security while emphasizing the importance of ensuring a secure and dignified return for displaced Gazans to their homes in Gaza. It further states that the EU will actively participate in a coordinated international effort to support the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, alongside advocating for unrestricted humanitarian access.

Expressing deep concern over the high number of civilian casualties, especially among women and children, as well as the dire humanitarian crisis exacerbated by limited aid entry into Gaza, particularly in the northern region, the EU condemns the unacceptable situation. Israel initiated its military campaign in Gaza following an incursion by Hamas militants into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in casualties and hostages on both sides.

Tragically, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 48,000 individuals in Gaza, as reported by Palestinian health authorities. With a significant portion of Gaza’s population displaced multiple times and much of the territory devastated, humanitarian organizations stress the urgent need for assistance.

Furthermore, the document highlights the EU’s firm opposition to any actions that threaten the viability of a two-state solution, reiterating the importance of establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
