State legislators advocate for a month-long celebration of chile

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The state’s beloved vegetable, cherished by many New Mexicans for its vibrant flavors ranging from red to green to the festive combination known as Christmas, has caught the attention of legislators who are now pushing for a special monthly tribute to red and green chile. “People must understand why New Mexico chile reigns supreme,” emphasized Representative Rebecca Dow (R-Truth or Consequences), a driving force behind the proposed bill.

Having already seen years of legislative efforts aimed at honoring the iconic green and red chile varieties, lawmakers are now rallying for an entire month dedicated to this spicy delicacy. “The response thus far has been overwhelmingly positive; the bill has garnered tremendous support with half of the House of Representatives’ members signing on,” shared Rep. Dow.

The proposed bill seeks to designate August as the official “New Mexico Red and Green Chile Month,” aligning with the bountiful harvest season and the celebrated Hatch Chile Festival. “The festival has truly put Hatch on the culinary map, making our chile world-famous,” expressed festival organizer Lisa Neal.

While the community of Hatch revels in chile festivities year-round, Neal is particularly thrilled at the prospect of formal recognition. “Throughout that entire month of chile harvesting, our valley sees a significant economic boost, and I am certain it also has a positive impact on the economy of New Mexico,” added Neal.

Representative Dow, whose district encompasses Hatch, is among several lawmakers championing the bill, viewing chile as a culinary superstar and a pivotal economic driver deserving of formal acknowledgment. “The promotion of chile is essential for the agriculture sector in New Mexico,” reiterated Rep. Dow.

“New Mexico has been increasingly immersed in chile cultivation, as the distinct flavor profile of chile grown here sets it apart,” noted Neal. The bill is presently under review by the House Government, Elections, and Indian Affairs committee. 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
