Young pitching talent secures a lucrative one-year deal.

MIAMI (AP) — Cal Quantrill, a skilled right-handed pitcher, and the Miami Marlins reached an agreement on a significant $3.5 million contract for the upcoming season. In addition to the base salary, Quantrill has the potential to earn an extra $500,000 through performance bonuses.

During his tenure with the Colorado Rockies last season, Quantrill showcased his abilities by achieving an 8-11 record with a 4.98 ERA across 29 starts. This performance not only led the team in victories but also positioned him as the third-highest contributor in terms of starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts (totaling 110). Notably, this marked his highest number of starts since his time with the Cleveland Guardians back in 2022, a season where he only managed 19 starts.

Initially drafted by the San Diego Padres as the eighth overall pick in the 2016 amateur draft, Quantrill has predominantly played in the major leagues with the Cleveland franchise. During his four-year stint with the Guardians, he accumulated a strong record of 27 wins and 15 losses, maintaining an impressive 3.58 ERA across 99 games. Noteworthy achievements during this period include leading his team with 32 starts in 2022 while achieving personal bests in innings pitched (186 1/3), strikeouts (128), and wins (15).

Quantrill’s addition to the Marlins roster bolsters their pitching rotation, especially with the anticipated return of star pitcher Sandy Alcántara following Tommy John surgery. The team recently parted ways with last season’s opening-day starter, Jesús Luzardo, who was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in December. Furthermore, left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett is set to miss the upcoming season due to undergoing left elbow UCL revision repair with internal brace surgery.

In order to accommodate Quantrill on the 40-man roster, the Marlins made the decision to place Garrett on the 60-day injured list.
