“US Open to Introduce Major Changes to Mixed Doubles Format”
It is a rare occurrence in the world of tennis for significant overhauls to be announced to tournament formats. The WTA and ATP tours typically operate independently, intersecting only at the Grand Slams and a few select 1000-level events. Mixed doubles contests are a rarity due to various factors such as scheduling constraints and court availability.
At prestigious events like the Grand Slams, players predominantly focus on either singles or doubles competitions. On occasion, top female players like Coco Gauff may participate in both singles and doubles events, showcasing their versatility. However, it is uncommon for highly-ranked singles players to compete in all three disciplines simultaneously, primarily due to the physical demands, especially for male athletes engaged in best-of-five set matches.
In some instances, top players may enter mixed doubles but subsequently withdraw as they progress in singles competitions. An example of this occurred last year when Emma Raducanu ended her partnership with Andy Murray at Wimbledon, citing a wrist injury as she advanced to the singles’ fourth round.
The US Open’s forthcoming changes aim to address such occurrences, ensuring that withdrawals from mixed doubles are limited to genuine injuries. While not all singles players may be inclined to participate in mixed doubles, the tournament will occur concurrently with their presence on-site for the main event.
Despite the anticipated benefits, the US Open’s adjustments to the mixed doubles format are not without criticism, especially from doubles specialists who feel marginalized in their pursuit of a Grand Slam title. Former doubles No. 1, Paul McNamee, expressed strong opposition to the decision, arguing that the event may no longer produce a legitimate mixed doubles champion.
However, the USTA’s perspective sees mixed doubles as a platform for innovation and audience engagement, potentially attracting larger crowds and generating interest. Traditionally viewed as supplemental entertainment, mixed doubles matches have the potential to captivate fans when marquee players are involved.
The USTA envisions scenarios where popular figures like Coco Gauff team up with American stars like Taylor Fritz or Ben Shelton, creating significant buzz and drawing substantial crowds to Arthur Ashe Stadium. By incentivizing player participation and reshaping the mixed doubles experience, the US Open aims to elevate the status of these matches from mere side attractions to significant standalone events during Grand Slam weeks.
