Cats are often seen as independent and a tad too self-sufficient, but let’s be real—they’ve charmed their way into countless homes and hearts. With their quirky behaviors, comforting purrs, and undeniable sass, it’s no wonder they are among the most popular pets worldwide. In fact, there are approximately 350 million pet cats globally, proving that their supposed aloofness hasn’t hindered people from falling in love with them.
The number of cat owners continues to rise across various countries, with staggering figures. The United States alone is home to around 74 million pet cats in 2025, making it the nation with the highest feline population. China closely follows with about 53.1 million pet cats, and the trend is on the rise. As more individuals embrace cat companionship, it’s evident that these little furballs are taking over, one purr at a time.
To delve into why cats have garnered such adoration as pets, we chatted with Dr. Asina Veluani, a retired veterinarian with over three decades of experience. “Cats are relatively low-maintenance pets,” she shared. “Compared to dogs, they require less upkeep, don’t need frequent walks, and can keep themselves entertained. That’s why they seamlessly fit into various lifestyles, whether someone is extremely busy or simply seeking a laid-back companion.”
One crucial aspect of cat ownership is ensuring they are spayed or neutered. “Most responsible cat owners ensure their pets are spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters and minimize the risk of certain health issues,” she explained.
And there’s a solid rationale behind it. “A single unspayed female cat, along with her offspring, can produce over 4,500 kittens in just seven years,” Dr. Veluani highlighted. “That’s a staggering number, and it underscores why cat overpopulation is a significant concern in many areas.”
Nevertheless, not all cats are spayed or neutered, and there are various reasons for this. “Some owners believe their cats should have a litter before being spayed, but there’s no scientific basis for this,” she noted. “Others simply procrastinate or underestimate how rapidly their cats can reproduce.”

Apart from addressing population control, it is important for cat owners to be aware of their pets’ fundamental needs. Dr. Veluani emphasized the necessity of providing cats with a proper diet, mental stimulation, and a secure environment for exploration. Contrary to common belief that cats can manage on their own, they require attentive care, regular meals, and plenty of affection.
Additionally, cats’ natural curiosity and intelligence should not be overlooked. Dr. Veluani highlighted that cats are naturally inquisitive, playful, and clever creatures who enjoy climbing, stalking, and playing with toys, even if they do not have to hunt for their food. Therefore, cat trees, scratching posts, and interactive toys are essential to ensure their well-being and happiness.
Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for maintaining cats’ health. Dr. Veluani stressed that cats are adept at concealing signs of illness, making routine health examinations crucial for detecting potential issues early and promoting a longer and healthier life for the feline companions.
