This colossal bear, renowned among the denizens of Altadena in Los Angeles by the monikers Victor and Berry, emerged as a focal point of attention amidst the chaos unleashed by the blazing fires that engulfed their neighborhood. Upon returning from the mandatory evacuation, a homeowner was startled to find the five-hundred-pound creature tucked away in the dark recesses of the crawl space beneath his residence. The situation posed a unique challenge as restoring power to the house was contingent upon coaxing the bear out from its hiding spot.
Conventionally, such scenarios involve tranquilizing and safely relocating the animal; however, the sheer size and weight of the bear rendered this approach impractical in this instance. The onus fell upon encouraging Berry to exit of his own accord, a task easier said than done. Recognizing his likely distress and apprehension following the traumatic events, wildlife experts resorted to a tried-and-tested method – the irresistible lure of delectable treats. Fruits, peanut butter, and even a mouth-watering rotisserie chicken were used as bait to entice the giant bear out of hiding.
True to expectations, Berry succumbed to the temptation of the feast laid out for him, enabling the rescuers to ensnare him safely. Subsequently, he was relocated to the Angeles National Forest for a thorough health assessment and outfitted with a tracking collar before being released back into the wilderness.
For residents wary of unwelcome bear visitors seeking refuge beneath their homes, proactive measures such as fortifying crawl spaces with sturdy barriers are advised to deter such occurrences. However, amidst the tumultuous events, the fortuitous presence of a sheltering spot proved to be a saving grace for Berry.
