HEALTH: The Friendship Bench: Providing Counseling in Underserved Communities Dr. Dixon Chibanda, a leading psychiatrist in Zimbabwe, initiated the Friendship Bench program. This initiative trained grandmothers to be the first line of support for individuals seeking mental health assistance in underserved areas. The program has expanded to include nearly 3,000 elderly listeners caring for over 300,000 people across Zimbabwe and has now extended to vulnerable communities in nine countries, including the United States.
