The message displayed reads, “Temporary surcharge: 50 cents per egg. Due to the nationwide rise in cost of eggs, we’ve added a temporary 50 cent per egg surcharge. Thank you for understanding.” Speaking to CNN, a representative of the restaurant explained, “The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has led to a significant spike in egg prices, leaving both customers and restaurants facing tough decisions.”

Anticipating that other eateries may soon implement similar surcharges, Cracker Barrel chose to take a stand. With an estimated annual sale of 162 million eggs, the chain confidently asserted on Instagram, “Egg surcharges? Never heard of it.” To sweeten the deal for their loyal customers, Cracker Barrel announced a special promotion: individuals ordering eggs through February 12 will receive double rewards points in their loyalty program, facilitating their journey towards earning free meals.
