In a shocking revelation that has sparked outrage and condemnation, an Israeli soldier has been sentenced to seven months in prison for the aggravated abuse of Palestinian detainees from Gaza at the Sde Teiman military detention center. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the reservist’s conviction, highlighting the disturbing nature of the abuse inflicted on the detainees.
The soldier, who remains unnamed by the IDF, was found guilty of multiple incidents where he physically assaulted the Palestinian detainees while they were restrained and blindfolded. The IDF disclosed that the soldier had punched the detainees with his fists and even used his weapon during the assaults, which were witnessed by other soldiers present at the scene. The soldier admitted to three counts of aggravated abuse and one count of unbecoming conduct as part of a plea deal reached with prosecutors. These charges were related to four separate incidents that took place between January and June 2024 while he was overseeing the transportation of detainees. The Beit Lid Military Court highlighted the soldier’s involvement in these disturbing acts and acknowledged the participation of other masked soldiers whose identities remain undisclosed.
In addition to the prison sentence, the convicted soldier also received a suspended sentence and was demoted to the rank of private by the IDF.
