While Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as prime minister may not seem like the typical inspiration for an opera, for some, she embodies a diva-like quality.
Historian Dominic Sandbrook, co-host of The Rest is History podcast, is collaborating with composer Joseph Phibbs to create a unique two-act opera titled Mrs T.
In addition to delving into Thatcher’s time in office, the opera seeks to shed light on the Iron Lady’s personality and character behind closed doors.
Phibbs explained to the BBC, “I believe she is well-suited for an operatic adaptation. She possessed a captivating theatricality in many aspects.”
Described as “an intimate exploration” of one of the most divisive and influential figures in British politics, the opera aims to offer a fresh perspective on Thatcher’s legacy.
Phibbs shared that the idea sprang to mind while watching a documentary about the Grantham-born leader. “Like many composers, I am always on the lookout for potential subjects, and the thought occurred to me, ‘Why not center an opera around Margaret Thatcher?'”
Initially deeming the idea somewhat eccentric, Phibbs grew increasingly fascinated by the concept. “She was, after all, the first female prime minister, and in her centenary year, the timing seemed ideal to bring this project to life.”
The opera is set to feature pivotal moments and prominent figures from Thatcher’s time in power, including Geoffrey Howe and Baroness Elspeth Howe of Idlicote.
Phibbs detailed scenes such as Thatcher’s interactions with Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, aiming to infuse the piece with “American vibrancy” and historical depth.
Moreover, the production hopes to illuminate lesser-known facets of Thatcher’s personal life, including her relationship with her personal assistant, Cynthia Crawford.
Phibbs emphasized, “I want to delve into Thatcher’s personal side, her womanhood, beyond the public facade we are familiar with. Politics, while central to her 11-year rule, serves as a backdrop. This opera is about character and aims to resonate with a broad audience.”
Though Thatcher has been portrayed in various media before, this opera marks the first time her premiership is the central focus in such a production.
Sandbrook, who crafted the libretto after a productive coffee meetup with Phibbs, shared his enthusiasm for the project. He clarified to the BBC that the opera is not a political statement but rather a depiction of the dramatic essence of that era.
The opera includes references to a letter Thatcher wrote in 1978 about the potential for an opera based on her life, inspired by seeing Evita.
Directed by Lucy Bradley and featuring mezzo-soprano Lucy Schaufer in the lead role, Mrs T promises to offer a captivating and unconventional portrayal of the iconic British leader.
