Anyone who has recently visited the grocery store is well aware of the significant surge in the price of eggs, with many establishments even grappling with shortages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported a staggering 65% increase in the cost of a dozen eggs over the course of the past year, and unfortunately, there appears to be no foreseeable end in sight to this upward trend. While some dining establishments have opted to transfer this additional expense onto patrons, Cracker Barrel has taken a different stance.
The renowned Old Country Store recently made waves on the social media platform Instagram by apparently taking a veiled jab at Waffle House, which had recently made headlines for instituting a nationwide egg surcharge. Waffle House menus now sport stickers declaring, “Temporary surcharge: 50 cents per egg. Due to the nationwide surge in egg costs, we have implemented a temporary 50-cent-per-egg surcharge. We appreciate your understanding.” Speaking to CNN, a Waffle House representative explained, “The ongoing egg shortage stemming from HPAI (avian flu) has triggered a substantial spike in egg prices, compelling both customers and dining establishments to confront challenging decisions.”
It is anticipated that other restaurants will likely follow suit in imposing egg surcharges, but Cracker Barrel has taken a different approach. Despite selling an estimated 162 million eggs annually, the establishment took to Instagram to assert, “Egg surcharges? That’s not a term we are familiar with.” Furthermore, customers who order eggs through February 12 will receive double “pegs” in the restaurant’s rewards program to assist them in accumulating points for complimentary food items.
Supporters on Instagram lauded this initiative, with comments such as, “Delivering what the people truly require 👏🏽” In a time where every opportunity to save money on food is highly valued, this gesture has been warmly received by patrons.
