Courtroom Altercation Erupts in Violent Confrontation During Trial

A video captured the dramatic moments when a murder suspect from New Mexico was viciously attacked in court by the uncle and stepfather of his alleged victim. Alexander Ortiz, 21, was apprehended by Albuquerque police in February for his suspected involvement in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, Alianna Farfan. Court documents reveal that Ortiz pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder charge brought against him in March.

The incident unfolded at the Bernalillo County Courthouse in Albuquerque during a plea hearing on a Friday morning. In the footage, a man is seen leaping over the courtroom barrier that separates the public from the defendants, making a beeline for Ortiz, who attempts to flee. Another man quickly joins the fray, leading to a chaotic scuffle involving several individuals wrestling and brawling on the floor, including Lucero, Ysasi, Ortiz, a corrections officer, Ortiz’s father, and a sixth unidentified man.

Lucero and Ysasi can be observed striking an unidentified man wearing jeans and a dark long-sleeved shirt, while the corrections officer intervenes to shield Ortiz. The altercation is only halted when the corrections officer deploys his Taser. According to court documents filed by the State of New Mexico in Metropolitan Court, the men involved are identified as Carlos Lucero and Pete Ysasi. Deputies were dispatched to the courtroom at approximately 9:30 a.m. in response to reports of an active fight.

Allegedly, Lucero and Ysasi breached the courtroom barrier, rushed toward Ortiz, and physically assaulted him, causing injuries to the corrections officer who was safeguarding Ortiz. Shortly after the scuffle, Lucero was overheard referring to the victim, Farfan, as his niece, expressing his anger towards Ortiz and justifying his actions.

Both Lucero and Ysasi sustained visible lacerations following the altercation, and court records indicate that they were subsequently arrested and charged with battery on a peace officer and assault on a jail officer. Although Lucero was released from the Metropolitan Detention Center the following day, Ysasi was also granted release shortly thereafter.

The circumstances surrounding Farfan’s tragic death, occurring on January 11, 2024, in her apartment, were detailed by the Albuquerque Police Department based on information gathered from acquaintances and family members. Reports suggest that Farfan and Ortiz had been in an abusive relationship, with tensions escalating on the day of the fatal shooting. Witnesses recounted hearing a gunshot while Farfan and Ortiz were in her bedroom, leading them to discover Farfan with a gunshot wound after forcibly entering the room.

Ortiz evaded capture momentarily but was eventually apprehended on February 21, 2024, following a brief standoff with law enforcement. He has remained in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center since his arrest, as confirmed by online records. Despite the unfolding events, there has been no
