A tragic accident in Georgia claimed the life of 22-year-old Christopher Katz, a US Capitol Police recruit from Crompond, Westchester County. Katz, who had a passion for protecting others, had recently graduated from Temple University with a degree in criminal justice and served in the US Army Reserves with the Military Police.
The incident occurred over the weekend when Katz and five other recruits, who had joined the Capitol Police last November, were in Georgia for training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick. Sadly, a fatal car crash took place while they were off duty, resulting in Katz’s untimely death and leaving five others badly injured.
US Capitol Police, along with lawmakers such as Hakeem Jeffries and Joe Morelle, expressed their sorrow over the tragic event and offered support to the recruits and their families during this difficult time. The House of Representatives is planning to honor Katz and the other recruits when they reconvene on Tuesday.
The accident occurred when a Ford Escape struck the Jeep Wrangler carrying the recruits, causing it to flip over on the F.J. Torras Causeway. Katz and two other passengers were ejected from the vehicle as a result of the collision.
