Putin says new Oreshnik missile system is also for Belarus

Russia plans to deploy its new Oreshnik missile system in Belarus as a deterrent to the West. President Vladimir Putin announced the decision during talks with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk. The deployment of these missile systems is set to begin in the second half of 2025. This move comes after Russia used the new medium-range missile against Ukraine, firing it at the city of Dnipro in November to send a warning. Putin cited the need to respond to Ukraine’s authorization of long-range Western missiles to target Russian territory.

The two presidents signed a treaty on mutual security guarantees, with Russia pledging to defend Belarus in case of an external existential threat. Putin mentioned that tactical nuclear weapons have already been stationed in Belarus, with control remaining in Moscow.

The anniversary of the Belarus-Russia union state was also marked during the meeting, with a new treaty emphasizing the defense and sovereignty of both countries. Putin reiterated that Russia’s nuclear doctrine allows for the use of nuclear weapons in response to conventional attacks threatening its existence.
