FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys conducted a virtual interview on Friday with Philadelphia offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, marking the initial formal step in the organization’s quest to fill the void left by former head coach Mike McCarthy. Moore served as the play-caller for Dallas franchise quarterback Dak Prescott from 2019 to 2022, encompassing the first three years of McCarthy’s five-year tenure. Following Moore’s departure for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023, McCarthy assumed the play-calling responsibilities. However, McCarthy recently parted ways with the Cowboys.
A former backup quarterback, Moore transitioned to the role of Prescott’s position coach in 2018 after having been his teammate in 2017. During his time as the offensive coordinator for the Eagles, Moore orchestrated an offense that showcased running back Saquon Barkley, who became the ninth player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards. Philadelphia is scheduled to face the Los Angeles Rams in the upcoming divisional round on Sunday.
The Cowboys are slated to proceed with interviews for two former NFL head coaches, Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier, in the near future. Saleh was relieved of his duties as head coach of the New York Jets during the fourth season in 2024, having been let go five games into the campaign. Frazier, currently serving as the assistant head coach in Seattle, previously helmed the Minnesota Vikings for over three years approximately a decade ago.
Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones has engaged in preliminary discussions with Colorado coach Deion Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback who played a significant role for the Cowboys, aiding them in capturing their most recent Super Bowl victory at the conclusion of the 1995 season. Since then, Dallas has not advanced beyond the divisional round of the playoffs. Another potential candidate being considered is Jason Witten, an 11-time Pro Bowl tight end who holds multiple franchise records for the Cowboys. Witten has been coaching at a private school in the Dallas area after retiring for the second time following the 2020 season.
