Step Inside the Iconic ‘Home Alone’ House, Sold for $5.5 Million!

The iconic Home Alone house in Winnetka, Illinois, has been sold above the asking price for $5.5 million. The five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence, made famous by the beloved 1990 Christmas classic, was listed for $5.25 million in May 2024 and quickly went under contract. The sale was confirmed by listing agents Dawn McKenna and Katie Moor of Coldwell Banker Realty in December 2024. The property garnered national attention and received a pending offer within a week of being on the market.

In a statement, the agents expressed their delight at the home’s significance in cinematic history and its ability to evoke timeless holiday memories. The house, featured prominently in the holiday film where 8-year-old Kevin McCallister is left home alone, boasts modern amenities such as a gym, movie theater, indoor sports court, and a heated garage. Former owner Trisha Johnson shared fond memories of hearing fans reenacting scenes from the movie outside the property, while former resident Laura Abendshien recalled the unique experience of living in the house during filming.

Macaulay Culkin, who played Kevin in the movie, jokingly mentioned his interest in buying the home for fun but ultimately decided against it. The property was previously owned by Tim and Trisha Johnson, who purchased it in 2012 for $1.585 million. The Home Alone house continues to capture the hearts of fans and remains a cherished piece of cinematic history.

When the movie was released in 1990, it suddenly became holiday season, and an endless line of cars and people flocked to see the house and capture photographs. This was a new phenomenon for us, but over time, we came to embrace it and share in the magic of the movie.
Dawn McKenna/Coldwell Banker Realty offers a glimpse inside the famous ‘Home Alone’ house. Originally constructed in 1921, this 9,126 sq. ft. property is tucked away behind a wrought-iron gate on a picturesque tree-lined street.
Although the home’s interiors may not be immediately recognizable to fans of Home Alone, it’s because the rooms were too small to accommodate a full film crew. To solve this issue, the production team constructed a full two-story soundstage inside a nearby abandoned school building.
Following a comprehensive renovation in 2018, the house now boasts a family room with soaring ceilings and French doors that lead out to the backyard. Additionally, there is a modern chef’s kitchen, a second family room, and a screened-in porch complete with a wood-burning fireplace.
Designed to accommodate a family akin to the McCallisters’, the residence features two upstairs and downstairs laundry rooms, as well as a practical mudroom for everyday use.

The second floor encompasses a primary suite adorned with a gas fireplace, a spacious walk-in closet, and a luxurious marble-clad bath. On the third floor, what was once an old attic has been transformed into a junior primary suite, adding to the home’s allure.
According to the listing, “From the anticipation of cozy movie nights and lively game days to festive holiday gatherings with cherished company, this enchanting family abode transcends mere architectural significance. It presents an opportunity to own a piece of cinematic history and forge enduring memories within its iconic walls.”
