Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket Triumphs on Maiden Flight!

Similar to SpaceX’s reliable Falcon 9, the New Glenn’s initial phase was crafted to autonomously navigate to a recovery ship operated by Blue Origin following its task of propelling the upper stage beyond the lower atmosphere. Reusability plays a crucial role in Bezos’ aspiration to vie with Musk in the space exploration domain. Although the booster successfully propelled the upper stage and initiated its descent towards the recovery ship Jacklyn—dedicated to Bezos’ mother—a loss of telemetry occurred during the final moments of the descent, leaving Blue Origin without information on the status of the booster.

The mission commenced at 2:03 a.m. EST as the New Glenn’s seven methane-burning BE-4 engines roared to life, propelling the rocket away from pad 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station amidst a dazzling display. Despite the mission delay due to inclement weather and minor technical issues, the launch proceeded smoothly, captivating spectators including Blue Origin staff, locals, and tourists.

Three minutes and 10 seconds post-launch, the first stage engines shut down, triggering stage separation and igniting the rocket’s second stage. As the upper stage continued its journey to orbit, the first stage maneuvered back towards Earth, targeting the recovery ship Jacklyn stationed several hundred miles downrange in the Atlantic Ocean. An NASA WB-57 aircraft documented the flight with high-resolution cameras.

During the re-entry phase, an anomaly occurred as one of the booster’s engines showed video freeze and telemetry stopped at an altitude of 84,226 feet and a velocity of 4,285 mph. The fate of the rocket—whether it exploded, malfunctioned, or crashed into the sea—remained uncertain at the time of the incident.

Blue Origin officials expressed readiness to learn from any anomalies and move forward with another flight in the upcoming months, with a new rocket in production. Unlike SpaceX’s ocean splashdown tests prior to landing attempts, Blue Origin chose to attempt the landing on the New Glenn’s inaugural flight, drawing from their experience with the New Shepard sub-orbital rocket. The audacious decision to attempt a first-time landing underscored the company’s confidence in their capabilities.

While the first-stage landing was a significant objective, the primary focus of the flight was to successfully place the upper stage into orbit, signaling a promising step forward in Blue Origin’s space exploration endeavors.

A Blue Origin-designed spacecraft, called the Blue Ring Pathfinder, acts as a space tug capable of hosting and deploying multiple satellites in various orbits. Equipped with on-board computer support and servicing capabilities, the Blue Ring embarked on its maiden voyage remaining attached to the New Glenn’s upper stage for a planned five-hour 50-minute mission. The flight profile of the New Glenn included two engine firings of the upper stage, with the second occurring approximately one hour post liftoff to place the vehicle and the connected Blue Ring Pathfinder into an elliptical orbit reaching heights of about 12,000 miles and lows around 1,500 miles.

The Blue Ring boasts roll-out solar arrays spanning 144 feet and offers 13 ports for payloads, accommodating satellites weighing up to 2.5 tons on its upper deck. While the initial flight did not carry any payloads, the spacecraft underwent testing to evaluate its performance in space. Blue Origin faces stiff competition from SpaceX, a dominant force in the commercial launch sector, as demonstrated by its successful Falcon 9 rocket missions. SpaceX is also testing the Super Heavy-Starship, an immense and fully reusable rocket anticipated to revolutionize payload launches to various destinations, including low-Earth orbit, the moon, and beyond.

As SpaceX prepares for a Super Heavy-Starship launch, Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket carries a backlog of satellites awaiting deployment. With plans to certify for launching national security payloads, NASA missions, and civilian satellites, Blue Origin aims to establish its presence in the competitive space market. Amazon, through its Project Kuiper initiative, intends to launch over 3,232 broadband relay stations to provide space-based internet services, challenging SpaceX’s Starlink program. Blue Origin has secured 80 launches with New Glenn rockets and boosters sourced from various providers to deploy these relay stations into orbit, showcasing ambition and confidence in the evolving space industry landscape.

“Space in general,” Limp said. “I think there’s going to be lots of winners in this segment. It might be SpaceX; I think Blue will be there. But I also believe there’s going to be new companies that we’ve never even heard of yet. There’s some entrepreneur out there that hasn’t started a space company that’s going to be at the table.”
