A Bronx woman accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend in the heart was described by his grieving sister as someone who was constantly trying to take advantage of her kind-hearted partner, The Post reported. Michael Bookhart, 32, was known for his ability to bring smiles to the faces of his friends before tragically losing his life to a stabbing incident during an argument with his girlfriend, Jamaya Nelson, 23, inside a Mott Haven apartment, according to his sister Melanie Bookhart.
In a phone interview with The Post, Melanie fondly remembered her brother as a jovial individual who enjoyed cracking jokes and bringing laughter to those around him. She shared, “My brother was a clown — he was always making jokes and making people laugh.” Melanie also highlighted Michael’s love for playing basketball and spending time with loved ones, stating, “Everyone who knew Mike knew what kind of person he was.”
However, Melanie had strong words for Nelson, the woman accused of fatally stabbing Michael at an apartment building on East 138th Street around 10:40 p.m. “They were dating for seven months,” Melanie revealed. “She was a dirty little thing. She was always trying to use him.”
Recounting the tragic events that led to her brother’s untimely death, Melanie mentioned that an argument had escalated, and Michael had expressed his desire to leave, resulting in him being stabbed in the heart. Despite the swift efforts of authorities to transport Michael to Lincoln Medical Center following the brutal assault, he did not survive.
Nelson was taken into custody by the police and faced charges of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and weapons possession, as detailed in the criminal complaint. Reflecting on her brother’s character, Melanie emphasized his ability to bring joy to others, a sentiment echoed by many who knew him.
