Pence shared that upon Trump’s approach down the aisle, he stood up, extended his hand, and congratulated him, to which Trump responded with a simple ‘Thanks, Mike.’ The exchange marked their first in-person meeting since the conclusion of their administration in January 2021.
Notably, during the brief interaction, former second lady Karen Pence chose to remain seated, refraining from engaging with Trump or incoming first lady Melania Trump. Addressing his wife’s decision, Pence remarked, “You’d have to ask my wife about her posture, but we’ve been married 44 years, and she loves her husband, and her husband respects her deeply.”
Seated a row behind Trump alongside other vice presidents, the Pences found themselves in close proximity to the former president and former first lady. Reflecting on the moment, Pence expressed gratitude, stating, “Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe that God put me on one of these rows.”
