Soul Music Legend Sam Moore Passes Away at 89!

Grammy-winning soul singer Sam Moore, best known as one half of the duo Sam & Dave, has passed away at the age of 89 in Coral Gables, Fla. His publicist Jeremy Westby confirmed the news of his death on Friday, citing complications from surgery as the cause.

Jon Bon Jovi, who collaborated with Moore on his 2006 solo album “Overnight Sensational,” paid tribute to the legendary musician on Facebook, praising him as one of the pioneers and greatest singers ever. Moore, born in Miami in 1935, began his musical journey at a young age in church and clubs before teaming up with Dave Prater to form Sam & Dave. The duo signed with Atlantic Records in 1964 and later became the biggest stars of Stax Records, alongside Otis Redding.

Sam & Dave achieved great success in the mid-1960s with hits like “Hold On! I’m Comin’,” “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” “I Thank You,” and the iconic “Soul Man,” which earned them the 1968 Grammy for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance. After parting ways in 1970, Moore faced personal struggles but eventually overcame addiction with the support of his wife, Joyce Moore, whom he married in 1982.

Despite the challenges, Moore continued his music career, collaborating with various artists and releasing solo works. He faced legal battles over the Sam & Dave name and fought for musicians’ rights, including retirement benefits. Moore’s influence extended beyond music, as he engaged in advocacy work and even reworked “Soul Man” into a campaign song for Bob Dole.

Throughout his career, Moore remained a respected figure in the music industry, receiving accolades such as induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. His legacy lives on through his impactful contributions to soul music and his enduring influence on future generations.

Awarded in 2019. Moore is survived by his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly.
