CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Newly sworn-in as the 83rd governor of New Hampshire, former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte pledged to unite people and continue building upon the state’s achievements, while also cautioning that budget cuts are on the horizon. Ayotte emphasized her commitment to serving all citizens regardless of political affiliation, stating that good governance transcends party lines. She succeeds former Republican Governor Chris Sununu and aims to uphold his pro-business economic policies, defeating multiple opponents in a competitive gubernatorial race.
In her inaugural address, Ayotte outlined plans to maintain the state’s prosperity but acknowledged the need for fiscal conservatism in the upcoming budget cycle. Emphasizing the importance of prioritizing essential services while seeking cost-saving measures across government agencies, she stressed the necessity of prudent financial management.
As the third woman elected governor of New Hampshire, Ayotte follows in the footsteps of Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan. Notably, she is the first woman to transition from a Senate term to the governorship, underscoring her unique political trajectory. Despite the 2016 rejection, she guided Justice Neil Gorsuch through his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he participated in the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Reaffirming her stance on the matter, she declared her intention to veto any legislation that seeks to further restrict abortion in New Hampshire, a state where the procedure is prohibited after 24 weeks of pregnancy. In response to criticisms from the state’s Democratic Party chairman, who accused her of aligning with Trump’s policies and steering the state towards a perilous course, she attempted to convey a bipartisan message. “Preserving our distinctive identity supersedes any individual or party,” she asserted. “Please understand this: Even in times of disagreement, my aim is always unity.”
