An energetic Chihuahua named Jellybean is sprinting towards new horizons, with a goal of setting records in marathons and half marathons. This 6-year-old, 9-pound Chihuahua mix has already completed six marathons alongside her owner, Andrew Owens. Jellybean’s journey into running started when Owens adopted her in 2020. Initially hesitant to join Owens and his other dog, Kodie, on their runs, Jellybean quickly embraced the activity and developed a passion for it.
Owens shared that their running routine started with short distances to ensure Jellybean’s safety. As she grew more comfortable and confident, their runs extended to longer distances, culminating in completing a half marathon and a full marathon, including a record-setting run at the Garmin Kansas City Marathon in October, finishing in 3 hours and 47 minutes.
Despite not fitting the typical image of a long-distance runner, Jellybean has defied stereotypes and exceeded expectations with her determination and heart. Owens emphasized that her accomplishments demonstrate that potential transcends appearances and lies in dedication and effort.
Owens and Jellybean maintain a rigorous training schedule, consistently running 20 to 30 miles every weekend. During their runs, Owens pays close attention to Jellybean’s body language to ensure she remains comfortable and safe. He looks for signs such as open mouth to gauge her readiness to continue or slow down.
Jellybean’s remarkable feats have not only motivated Owens but have also inspired others. Owens shared that Jellybean garners admiration and support from fellow competitors at races, with many expressing disbelief followed by awe and words of encouragement. Despite initial skepticism, Jellybean has proven herself capable of completing every step of the challenging races she undertakes.
