JetBlue Flight Passenger Opens Door, Deploys Slide at Logan Airport!

Passenger restrained by fellow travelers on JetBlue flight

A spokesperson for JetBlue reported that a passenger unexpectedly opened an overwing exit on a flight for reasons unknown and remained on board the aircraft. Massachusetts State Police were alerted to a disturbance on the plane after it had taxied onto the active runway. One individual was taken into custody.

According to state police, the incident occurred just before takeoff when a passenger, seeking to disembark, abruptly opened an aircraft door without warning. Prompt action by other passengers restrained the individual until troopers arrived to apprehend them for further questioning. The passenger is anticipated to face charges and will appear in East Boston District Court on Wednesday morning. The individual’s identity has not been disclosed.

Eyewitness account of the event

Fred Wynn, a passenger on the flight, recounted the incident to WBZ-TV. Wynn mentioned that the disruptive passenger, seated behind him with his girlfriend, engaged in a heated argument. “The boyfriend and girlfriend were arguing behind me,” Wynn stated. “The boyfriend became agitated, stood up, walked down the aisle, forcibly opened the emergency door, tearing it off completely. An FBI agent subdued him and placed him in handcuffs, after which state police boarded the plane and escorted him off.”

Impact on other passengers

Travelers on subsequent flights experienced delays due to the disruptive event. Tim Wahl, who had just arrived from Phoenix, expressed his concern over the situation. “They announced that there was a disabled plane on the runway, which was quite alarming as I had never encountered that before,” Wahl remarked. His incoming flight was forced to circle around Boston, causing a delay. Upon landing, Wahl witnessed the chaotic scene unfolding. “As we descended, we passed over the stationary plane. There were numerous law enforcement officers outside; it appears that someone had activated the emergency slide. Quite unsettling,” Wahl added.

Investigation and assurance of public safety

State police have indicated that preliminary findings suggest the incident was isolated and poses no threat to public safety. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the matter.
