A man who bit off his housemate’s ear during a dispute over noise has received a suspended prison sentence. Dean Ellis and his housemate were residing in supported accommodation when an argument escalated in the early hours of April 15, 2023, following Ellis’s noisy return home, as detailed in Newcastle Crown Court.
After a heated exchange of punches lasting about 15 minutes, Ellis gruesomely bit off a substantial portion of the man’s ear and callously threw it at him, according to court testimony. The 36-year-old, known for a history of violent behavior, pleaded guilty to causing injury without intent and was sentenced to 23 months in jail, suspended for two years.
The incident unfolded when Ellis, currently residing at Riverdale House in Stakeford, Northumberland, returned to the flat around 04:00 BST after a night of drinking, recounted prosecutor Michael Cahill. The victim requested Ellis to lower the noise levels, setting off a physical altercation culminating in the ear-biting episode.
In a poignant statement, the victim expressed permanent disfigurement and his apprehension regarding his young children witnessing his altered appearance, fearing their reaction. He disclosed resorting to always wearing a hood outdoors and voiced concerns over the potential impact on his employment prospects due to the missing ear. He also cited diminished self-esteem and the onset of depression post-attack.
Judge Sarah Mallett acknowledged the severity of the assault and its profound impact on the victim while noting the potential for Ellis’s rehabilitation prospects. Alongside the suspended sentence, Ellis was mandated to pay £500 in compensation to the victim.
Court records revealed Ellis’s prior convictions, including aggravated burglary and wounding in 2008, resulting in a three-and-a-half-year prison term.
