Pamela Anderson often opts for a makeup-free look, a choice mirrored by her character in the film “The Last Showgirl.” In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 57-year-old actress elaborated on the decision for her character, Shelly, a Las Vegas dancer facing the end of her long-standing show, to forego cosmetics in most situations, reserving them only for her stage performances.
“I wanted to portray how Shelly would present herself when simply going to the grocery store,” Anderson explains. “I aimed for authenticity and realism, and I eagerly embraced that approach.”
Preparing for each day of filming, Anderson intentionally avoided looking in the mirror. “I didn’t want my appearance to influence my mindset in any way, except when in front of the showgirl mirrors [in the movie],” she clarifies.
Renowned for her past as a Playboy model and Baywatch star, Anderson is now receiving critical acclaim, as well as awards recognition, for her portrayal of Shelly in director Gia Coppola’s poignant drama centered around a woman navigating a pivotal moment in her life.
The actress expresses her eagerness to delve deeply into a character like Shelly, a role that Coppola specifically envisioned for Anderson. Despite initial reluctance from Anderson’s agent, who dismissed the movie without informing her, the script eventually made its way to her through her son Brandon, prompting her immediate commitment to the project.
“After reading the script, I knew I had to seize this opportunity. It was truly exhilarating. I even decided to switch agencies,” Anderson discloses. “Previously, I lacked strong representation or individuals who believed in me. Only after ‘The Last Showgirl’ did I find the support I needed. It takes a project that challenges you to break free from preconceived notions and showcase your versatility.”
Reflecting on her journey to securing the role, Anderson admits, “I never anticipated this chance would materialize. At one point, I felt like I had missed my shot.”
Upon joining the film, Anderson approached her preparation akin to that of a theatrical production. “I meticulously studied the script, mastering every detail before even arriving in Las Vegas. However, once on set, I relinquished control and allowed Gia to guide me,” she recounts.
Featuring an ensemble cast including Jamie Lee Curtis, Brenda Song, Billie Lourd, and Kiernan Shipka, “The Last Showgirl” is set to hit theaters on Friday, January 10.
