An 87-year-old man from Vermont tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a turtle on a Florida highway over the weekend, according to authorities. The incident occurred on Interstate 95 in Indian River County on July 6. Despite one car slowing down to allow the man to pass, another driver failed to stop in time, resulting in a collision that led to the man’s death at the scene. Unfortunately, the turtle also did not survive the accident, as confirmed by Jim Beauford, the chief of public affairs for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The man was struck while crossing I-95 southbound north of Sebastian Boulevard at around 4:20 p.m. local time. The drivers of the vehicles involved, a black Mazda SUV and a white Dodge pickup, were unharmed, as well as a passenger in the Mazda. The man’s identity was not disclosed in the press release, as FHP only includes names in press releases if individuals have been arrested.
