Sand can be a persistent beach-day souvenir that lingers in your clothes and washing machine long after the fun is over. While a little sand here and there won’t harm your washer, an accumulation of grit can cause damage over time. To keep your clothes and machine free from sand and ensure optimal performance, experts recommend the following methods:
1. Before washing beach towels or mats, shake them outdoors to remove excess sand. Use a soft brush or broom to sweep off as much sand as possible. If the items are still damp, allow them to line dry outside to help the sand release from the fabric. For items still retaining sand, spray them with a hose and repeat the process to minimize grit in the washing machine.
2. If sand does find its way into your washer, wipe down the interior with a microfiber cloth to catch loose grains. Let the machine air dry with the door open for a couple of days. Vacuum the drum and door seal using a brush attachment to remove remaining sand particles.
3. Front-loaders often have a filter at the front bottom where sand can accumulate. Unscrew the cover, remove any debris, clean the filter with water, and use a soft toothbrush if needed to dislodge stuck-on debris. Consult the owner’s manual for specific instructions.
4. For persistent sand buildup, consider removing the drum for a deep cleaning. Hose down the housing and seals before reassembling.
