Honda is issuing a recall for 259,033 vehicles in the United States due to a brake pedal defect that affects a small number of cars. The issue stems from the brake pedal pivot pin not being properly staked during production, potentially causing the pedal to move side to side and impede drivers’ ability to safely stop their vehicles, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Various vehicle models are at risk of having faulty brake pedals, including the following:
– Acura TLX (2021-2025)
– Acura MDX (2023-2025)
– Honda Pilot (2023-2025)
The NHTSA warns that if the brake pedal malfunctions, drivers face an increased risk of accidents or injuries. Affected vehicles will display a warning sign when the brake pedal is not functioning correctly, with a brake malfunction light illuminating and drivers experiencing an unusual sensation when applying the brakes.
Owners of the impacted vehicles will be contacted by mail and directed to visit an authorized Honda or Acura dealer to have the brake pedal replaced, if necessary. Those who have already had the brakes repaired can seek reimbursement, according to the NHTSA.
The defective brake pedals were produced at a now-closed U.S. facility, with production moving to Mexico in November 2024. Although the manufacturer attempted to increase staffing levels and inventory to facilitate the transition, insufficient training led to the brakes’ pivot pins not being staked properly, causing the issue, according to the NHTSA.
