Illegal Cock-Fighting Bust in Southern California Leads to Arrests, Seizures
A recent crackdown on an illegal cock-fighting operation in Southern California has resulted in the arrest of two individuals, with dozens of spectators also being detained by authorities. The raid, which took place in Yucaipa, saw the confiscation of a large number of roosters, weapons, and cash.
Jose Adame, 33, and Carlos Romero, 35, were taken into custody following a police response to reports of illicit cock-fighting activities occurring on a property situated on the 32000 block of Avenue E. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spearheaded the operation, which led to the apprehension of the suspects.
In addition to the arrests, law enforcement officials detained 33 individuals at the scene, where a significant number of vehicles were parked. As authorities closed in, many attendees attempted to flee, highlighting the sudden and chaotic nature of the bust.
A total of 250 roosters were seized from the property, along with a fighting ring equipped with a scoreboard. Furthermore, approximately 24 firearms were recovered from a sizable safe, alongside steel talons that are commonly affixed to birds during fights. The discovery of 17 deceased roosters, eight live birds, and 61 boxed roosters underscored the extent of the operation.
Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the property also housed a trailer and other structures, several of which were red-tagged by authorities. The thorough investigation conducted by animal control officers shed light on the grim realities of the underground cock-fighting scene.
Adame faces a litany of charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals, and failure to yield. His attempt to evade arrest by ramming a patrol unit prompted a pursuit by law enforcement, culminating in his apprehension. Subsequent searches of his vehicle led to the discovery of three live roosters in the cargo area, further implicating him in the illicit activities.
Meanwhile, Romero was apprehended after being found hiding in his truck, accompanied by seven live roosters confined in boxes. The presence of a substantial amount of cash and a semi-automatic handgun concealed within the vehicle added another layer of complexity to the case. He now faces charges of animal cruelty and illegal possession of a firearm.
Both suspects were processed and booked at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against animal cruelty and illicit gambling practices.
