15-Year Sentence for Killer Won’t Be Reviewed!

Ranei Wilks, aged 23, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the manslaughter of 18-year-old Jamie Meah in 2023. The appeal to review his sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme has been rejected by the Attorney General’s Office. Wilks had been convicted of manslaughter and wounding another teenager with intent to cause GBH after a trial at Leeds Crown Court. Despite the case being considered, it was determined that Wilks’ sentence did not meet the high threshold required for a referral to the Court of Appeal. The decision was based on the criteria that a sentence must be unduly lenient, with a gross error made by the sentencing judge or a sentence imposed outside the reasonable range for the offense. Wilks was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter and the additional charge. The incident involved the fatal stabbing of Jamie Meah and the serious injury of a 16-year-old boy by a group of men in Armley.
