The French National Assembly adopted a text calling on the government to recognize the actions of the Ottoman authorities against the Assyrian-Chaldeans as genocide.
Turkey condemned the resolution, describing it as "accusations that lack legal and historical basis".
The text calling on the government to recognize the "massacres" of Assyrian-Chaldeans by the Ottoman authorities between 1915 and 1918 as genocide was unanimously adopted by the French National Assembly on Monday.
The proposal was submitted to parliament by Sylvain Maillard, president of the pro-Macron Renaissance group.
In France, the National Assembly's resolutions are not binding on the executive.
The resolution therefore calls on the government to "officially recognize the mass extermination, deportation and suppression of the cultural heritage of more than 250,000 Assyrian-Chaldeans as genocide" and "condemn the genocide".
'The decision of the French National Assembly is null and void'
"The resolution on Assyrians and Chaldeans adopted by the French National Assembly on April 29, 2024 is null and void," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a written statement.
The statement said that bringing these allegations to the agenda of the National Assembly is "an example of efforts to distort historical events for political interests".
"This resolution is also contrary to the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which stipulates that the crime of genocide can only be charged by a competent court," the statement continued.
