US pharmacy chain CVS plans to remove widely used phenylephrine flu drugs from its shelves after an advisory committee to the US Food and Drug Administration said earlier this year that they were ineffective.

The products contain an oral formulation of phenylephrine (PE), which is found in several over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.

According to FDA data, these products had sales of $1.8 million last year alone.

Although PE has been used as a decongestant for nearly a century, experts have questioned its effectiveness for years.

"We are aware of the FDA Advisory Committee's position on oral phenylephrine (PE) and will follow the FDA's instructions to ensure that the products we sell comply with all laws and regulations," CVS said in a statement. We are removing certain oral cough and cold products from CVS Pharmacy stores that contain phenylephrine as the sole active ingredient. Other oral cough and cold products will continue to be offered to meet consumer needs."

CVS did not provide information on the brands to be removed.
