ET announced today that a woman named Sonia Nixon was sentenced to 5 years in prison for making more than 2,000 calls to 999, the emergency call center, between 2021 and 2023.

"Sonia Nixon (57) called the emergency line 1194 times in 2023. Between 2021 and 2023, she used 17 different cell phone numbers to call the call center, making her the fifth most frequent caller during that period. Nixon was taken into custody on Wednesday, January 10 for violations of the 2003 Communications Act and was charged with 670 separate offenses. The persistent offender is estimated to have cost the Metropolitan Police approximately £4,500 over a five-month period for his abuse of the 999 system, which has a significant impact on how quickly operators can respond to genuine emergencies."

The MET also reported that Nixon made racist remarks and harassed a police officer and staff during searches and while in custody, and attempted to urinate in a police vehicle.

"This is an excellent result, a testament to the hard work and determination of the police to bring Sonia Nixon to justice. "Nixon has been a huge drain on local and wider Met resources by repeatedly harassing our emergency workers with vile and racist behavior and making threats on the streets. The excellent work of the police in convicting Ms. Nixon means we can prevent her from making more calls and impacting 999 service levels, prioritizing resources where they are really needed and helping to restore trust."
